ITA Cheloe and Debralou - that's how I felt about them too.  There was something in the way that he protected and looked over her - but from a distance - that really impressed me.  He was always there when she needed him, but he always gave her the space to handle it on her own.  He understood that she was strong enough to face her foes but that sometimes she needed the reassurance that she really could do it on her own.

I hear what you're all saying and yes he was wonderful in those ways, but still I wasn't a Strikes-the-Sky fan more than that, I loved Liam, though you do bring up some excellent points. I still don't think Hannah has met the "one". I believe there is that gentleman in Rosina's QOS excerpt Kit Wyndham he seemed taken by Hannah, I also remember Lily's reaction to him, that he was a good looking man and had strength of character (I think that's what she thought), so maybe he's the one. I wished for awhile it had been Dr. Savard because he really got her as well.  Suddenly I'm feeling like a mother trying to marry off her daughter

Oh boy - I'm going to be a VERY over-protective "mother" in the next book.  LOL!  Not only will the new man in her life have to accept her white and indian side - but he'd have to understand her losses and really find a way to bring her to life.

Hannah is such a complex character. I will be interesting to see how Rosina deals with her. She is mixed racially , intelligent, trained as a doctor, and has suffered incredible loss, all at a time when the first three were not accepted . Creating a male character that can handle all that would be hard. Someone like her father or grandfather would be good. Anyway since Rosina is the author I will leave it to her.

Who's Kit Wyndham? I hope that Hannah finds a drop dead gorgeous guy. But not too much like Nathaniel or Hawkeye, wouldn't want her feeling like she married her father/grandfather.
It will, in a way, be a relief when Hannah finds someone, she deserves it seven fold. She's been through alot and needs a bit of sun after her storm.

A wild thought - what about Hannah as the next generation's Curiosity.  It's certainly foreshadowed a bit in the midwifery training.

She knows things.

She can work up a good indignation just as Curiosity can.

Roots of pain, worked into experience and wisdom?

Although there's nothing to say that she could still be married - or perhaps just widely experienced?

I agree with a lot of what has been said so far. It really bugged me when Liam died, I really thought he and Hannah were going to get together afterall. I liked Liam and it broke my heart when he died. I think that was one of the most beautiful scenes of FATS (sad but beautiful). I also agree that Hannah has yet to find someone that embraces both parts of herself. But I was also left wondering at the end of FATS if Hannah herself is also learning what it is to be of mixed race origin and how to embrace both parts of herself. There always seems to be this inner conflict in her. The mixed race character is often portrayed in stories (speaking generally here) as someone with a lot of conflict that it would be nice to have a character of mixed race who is comfortable in their skin and who can embrace both cultures without conflict. I suppose being mixed myself, it does always interest me how authors write these characters.

Cheloe, this is the link to the QOS excerpt that Rosina posted awhile back http://www.tiedtothetracks.com/storytelling/archives/000723.htm

At the very least we did get closure where Hannah and Liam were concerned, I think she knew she could love him but something kept her from doing it.  There is still the closure to be had with Strikes-the-Sky, we don't have that yet.

IMO, Hannah is one of the best written characters in a book, she's full of layers, we really don't know what she'll do, think, or feel about something. She's a survivor, fighter, mother, lover etc... but there is so much more to her that she has kept to herself.

I think part of Hannah's problem is that the world in which she lived was segregated in many ways. When Hannah married she was indian for those 10 years. She took some of her white medicine with her but I don't think that there was anything white about her life. When she is in Paradise she is in a white world and lives more as a white. At least at home there is alot more room to just be Hannah. I do love Hannah for her complexity.
