How to get on board
« on: August 22, 2006, 01:48:18 PM »

This new subforum is an experiment. It's meant to be a place for you to discuss your work in progress. You can post excerpts and ask for feedback, and provide feedback for others.

It's always tricky getting something like this going. If you haven't done any workshopping before, you might  not be familiar with the process and the vocabulary. There is also a set of common sense guidelines for how to discuss difficult matters and how to provide constructive criticism. This is something you have to learn to provide -- and also to accept. Not everybody is going to like everything you post.

I'm going to try to get some guidelines up in the next few days to set the ground rules.

Two other things: this forum will be restricted. That is, private. Anyone with a real interest in writing and reading is welcome to join. All you have to do is ask -- and you do that by posting a reply to this thread, saying you'll abide by the guidelines.

If this takes off I'll most likely have to ask somebody to moderate, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. In the meantime, it takes courage to post your work, but you should be confident that you (and it) will be treated respectfully.

Finally: you can only expect to get feedback if you provide it for others. If things seem to be getting unbalanced I'll turn on the karma feature, which will help people keep track of how they're doing.

So let me know if you want in. Until I add you to the workshop, you won't be able to access any of the boards inside it.

Rosely and MyUtopia -- you should now have access to the workshop threads. Let me know if you don't, okay?

Expand please! Is this strictly for writers? You say "Anyone with a real interest in writing and reading is welcome to join." Is the operative word AND? I'm guessing writers need non-writer readers, but maybe not. Again, expand, please!

I would love to be part of this forum. I have just had one of my manuscripts requested by an editor in NY (even more exciting since I'm based in New Zealand a million miles away!) and providing feedback for others and asking for feedback on my own WIP would be very beneficial.
