Mystic River, Dennis Lehane *****

Dennis Lehane is one of my favorite modern authors. He has written an excellent series of detective novels (beginning with A Drink Before the War and ending... I hope not yet), but it is his two stand-alone novels (Mystic River and Shutter Island) that demonstrate what he is really capable of. They are very different from each other, and each one is amazing in its own way. Mystic River has just come out as a movie and is getting very good critical reviews, but I'm almost afraid to see it. Though I'm sure I will, and soon.
